Detroit (meaning 'strait" in French) was founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, incorporated as a village in 1802, and achieved city status in 1815. By the 1870's manufacturing became the dominant industry over agriculture. In the early 20th century, Detroit's ideal location for receiving raw materials and its trained railroad manufacturing workforce gave Detroit an advantage in the emerging automobile manufacturing industry.

Today, the greater Detroit region with a population of 5.3 million is made up of 11 counties and 7,000 square miles. In addition to still being the center of the automotive world, the region's fastest growing industries include information technology, logistics, health care, defense, and aerospace. With 29 higher education institutions, the region is home to one of the nation's most highly skilled workforces and year after year graduates more engineers per capita than any other area in North America.
